Okay so it may be on the fast side but it's playing fair. Both horses were winning on the lead and from off the pace the first two days of the meeting and that is all you can ask for. Also, despite close to 14 (yeah, that's right) 14 inches of rain in about a week, the track drained. Can you imagine how the old synthetic course would have fared? Good God.
It seems like Bob Baffert has a monster on his hands. Yeah, just what he needs, another two-year-old monster in his stable. The Factor a two-year-old colt by War Front looked quite impressive in breaking his maiden in track record time when he covered the 6 furlong distance in 1:06.98 while making the second start of his career. Under Rafael Bejarano The Factor paid $4.80 to his backers and appears to have a very bright future ahead of himself here.
The $100,000 California Breeders' Champion went to Thirtyfirststreet under Rafael Bejarano for trainer Doug O'Neill at $13.80 while edging out the favorite Arresting Officer with a furious late charge.
Switch found her rivals to her liking in the Grade I $250,000 La Brea for trainer John Sadler and jockey Joel Rosario. Switch, was second recently to Zenyatta but found no such monsters here and paid $4.40 to her backers.
Sidney's Candy took down the $150,000 Grade II Sir Beaufort on the new dirt surface when the race was taken off the turf due to the recent rains. Making it a big day for trainer John Sadler, Joel Rosario rode the three-year-old colt by Candy Ride and as the odds on pick returned $2.60 for the win.
Completing the stakes sweep, Twirling Candy took home the winners share of the purse in the $250,000 Grade I Malibu. Ridden again by Joel Rosario for trainer John Sadler, the son of Candy Ride left little doubt who was best here while winning easily and returning $9.
Jeranimo took home the winners share of the Grade II $150,000 San Gabriel on Monday under Rafael Bejarano for trainer Mike Pender. The four-year-old colt was winning for the fifth time in 15 lifetime starts and looked quite at home over the Santa Anita turf course. The son of Congaree paid $10.20 to his backers.

Hollywood Park cancels closing day after second race
How fitting. Hollywood Park cancels the Sunday closing day card after the second race because of unsafe racing conditions when the jockeys met with track management and discussed a part of the track that was "unsafe and deep." While there was significant rain at Hollywood Park over the past 48 hours, the "all weather" label put on the synthetic tracks has truly become a joke. Lets hope the return of the dirt at Santa Anita will once again allow for races to be contested in the rain, over a muddy surface and put an end to this era of synthetics which has been truly a joke.
All eyes will be on Santa Anita when the "new" dirt surface will be unveiled on opening day, Sunday, December 26. So far the track has drawn good reviews from horsemen and owners and has withstood a pretty good pounding from the rains that have hit the area over the past 72 hours. However we can also remember when the same thing was being said when the synthetic courses were installed. Maybe that's why everyone is holding their breaths at the moment.
Santa Anita will race on a Thursday through Sunday platform until March 2011 when they will revert back to a Wednesday through Sunday platform. We agree with this and hope that it helps with the short fields that have been plaguing the Southern California industry.
Saturday's Grade I $750,000 Cashcall Futurity was taken by Comma to the Top but not before the 2-year-old gelded son of Bwana Charlie (Indian Charlie) caused a 25-minute delay as the Peter Miller trainee had lost a rear shoe walking to the paddock before the race and required some shoe repair before the start. It didn't matter, Comma to the Top outran his rivals at $7 and the winner looked he could have run without shoes, or an extra pair for that matter. Corey Nakatani rode the winner for his sixth win in 10 lifetime starts.
Congrats to trainer Mel Stute for winning his 2,000 career race this past week at Hollywood Park.

Cost of Freedom to be seen next in Sunshine Millons
Cost of Freedom, the speedy 7-year-old gelding trained by John Sadler will be next seen in the upcoming Sunshine Millions in January when the gelding will run over the new dirt surface at Santa Anita. Winning easily this past weekend at Hollywood Park in the Miles Tyson Stakes, Cost of Freedom shouldn't have too much of a problem adapting to the dirt since he has won over the dirt surface before. His last three races have been won over the synthetic course at Hollywood Park. Cost of Freedom was due to be moved to Santa Anita with the rest of Sadler's runners on Monday.
Opening day for Santa Anita is Sunday, December 26.

Final week of Hollywood Park Racing
With all the pressures of the Holidays fast approaching we now look ahead to the upcoming Santa Anita meeting and can't wait for the meeting to begin on Sunday, December 26th! The Santa Anita meeting of course will unveil the new dirt course and from what we have heard it's being met with rave reviews from horseman who love it. Training began over the new surface last Monday.
HOY talk between Blame and Zenyatta will begin now and look for the pace to become fast and furious over the next few weeks as the vote draws closer. We can't wait to see what happens this year and hope Zenyatta pulls it out. It should be a very close vote.
Hollywood Park wisely went back to a 4-day week and we wonder why all the Southern California tracks don't go to that platform. It simply makes sense to do that especially with the horse shortage and all.
The seven-year-old gelding Cost of Freedom just keeps on winning races as the son of Cee's Tizzy was perfectly spotted again by his connections in Saturday's $55,000-added Miles Tyson. Under Joe Talamo, the John Sadler trainee wired his rivals in track record time and won in hand. Look for him back at Santa Anita as he looks for his fourth win in a row.
The Grade I $300,000 Hollywood Starlet went to Turbulent Descent for trainer Mike Puype under David Flores and the daughter of Congrats (A.P. Indy) looked solid keeping her unbeaten streak in tact. She is now a perfect 3 for 3 lifetime and has the makings of a very nice filly.
We hope to see you out at closing week at Hollywood Park. If not, maybe we'll meet with you at Santa Anita in the near future. http://www.horseracing-selections.com/ is the place to be for winning information! Take us to the track with you!

Trainer Bob Baffert slam dunks another one
Bob Baffert has another one! The 3-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, Alcindor looked nothing short of awesome in his win on Sunday in the 8th race. Even though it was just a allowance affair, the way this colt scored, coming off a gutty nose maiden win, has people talking. Now two for two lifetime, Alcindor was ridden by Rafael Bejarano and should be followed up the ladder.
Zenyatta says farewell on Sunday, December 5th to her fans at Hollywood Park and then will head to her new home in Kentucky on Monday, December 6. All fans that are able to are encouraged to see her off as it will be the last time she'll be available to the public.
Hollywood Park will go back to a five day work week beginning on Wednesday, December 1 with a racing schedule Wednesday though Sunday as long as the race cards fill. This new schedule will last until closing day on Sunday, December 19th.
The 7-year-old gelding, Cost of Freedom continued with his winning ways on Thanksgiving Day by posting another win in the Grade III $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood at Hollywood Park for trainer John Sadler under Joe Talamo. Cost of Freedom is now 10 for 20 lifetime and the Calbred son of Cee's Tizzy (Relaunch) is showing no signs of slowing down. Look for him to be back at Santa Anita.
Team Valor International and Green Lantern's Gypsy's Warning put it all together on Friday at Hollywood Park when the daughter of Mogok (Storm Cat) took home the winners share of the Grade I $250,000 Matriarch. Now seven for 16 lifetime, the 5-year-old mare ran perhaps her best race in the U.S. so far while posting the win under Joel Rosario for trainer Graham Motion. Getting a nice, ground saving trip also helped and this mare may be seen back in California at Santa Anita.
The Grade II $250,000 Citation Handicap was taken by Victor's Cry at $24.40 for trainer Eoin Harty under Victor Espinoza as the 5-year-old ridgling rolled home late to post the upset over favored Court Vision who checked in 4th. Victor's Cry was winning for the first time since his upset win in the Shoemaker Mile over the same course back on May 10 of this year.
Haimish Hy upset the field at $25.80 when winning the Grade I $250,000 Hollywood Derby for trainer Art Sherman under Garret Gomez. The 3-year-old colt by Ecton Park (Forty Niner) was posting his first Graded win and has now won five races from 10 lifetime tries.

Approaching Thanksgiving day
Everything is proceeding as planned with the installation of Santa Anita's new dirt surface and we are all excited here as to playing the ponies when they start racing over it on Sunday, December 26! If you haven't been apart of watching the installation, click here to watch now! http://santaanita.com/content/workout-webcam
We hope the other tracks will then follow Santa Anita's lead and tear up the synthetic crap that has been a big part in ruining racing in California and driving down the handle.
Premier Pegasus sure did look good winning the Grade III $100,000 Hollywood Prevue on Saturday. Trained by Myung Kwon Cho and ridden by Alonso Quinonez, the 2-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus drew away late and returned $6 to his backers. Winning for the third time in three lifetime efforts, the colt kept his unbeaten mark in tact and is sure a force to be reckoned with down the road. he's owned by M K Cho Stables LLC.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the week was turned in by Turbulent Descent for trainer Mike Puype under David Flores at $3.40. The 2-year-old daughter of Congrats (A.P. Indy) took down the $100,000 Moccasin in impressive fashion while really never being asked by her rider. Now a perfect two for two, she was coming off an impressive maiden win while earning a nice Beyer number of 91. Owned by Blinkers On Racing Stables et al, look for promising things down the road from this filly.
Remember race fans, early first post on Turkey Day at Hollywood Park of 11:00 A.M. Don't forget to take us with you when you head out to the track! Sign up now for winning selections by visiting http://horseracing-selections.com/

Tidbits left over from Breeders' Cup
We still are bummed by Zenyatta's loss in the classic. But we still are as proud as ever by the mare's accomplishments and what she has done for the sport. If there was an Eclipse Award for being the official ambassador to the sport she should receive it. What we can't understand however are the throngs of Zenyatta fans bitter towards Blame for beating her. LOL What is there to be bitter about? Both horses displayed greatness and courage and should be applauded. Lets show some class Zenyatta fans.
Speaking of Blame, he begins his new career at Claiborne with a stud fee of $35,000. Can you imagine if Blame and Zenyatta teamed up and had a baby? Wow! Both horses have great prospects as horse parents.
Zenyatta will be at Hollywood Park "winding down" from her campaign and no final plans have been made yet as to where she'll ship to as she begins her new career as a broodmare. Postings continue to pop up on blogs that she hasn't been retired as of yet but she has been. A formal announcement will be coming soon.
Another retirement comes in the way of Mind That Bird who lost his ninth straight race since winning the 2009 Kentucky Derby at 50-1. The time is right for this guy to begin his new career as he simply looks to have lost interest in racing. As of right now no formal arrangements have been made.
Lookin At Lucky has returned to Hollywood Park and no plans have yet been made with his future. Asked if Lookin At Lucky would have a 4-year-old racing campaign trainer Bob Baffert responded with "Right now, I'd say yes."
Unusual Suspect upset the field Saturday in the Grade I $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup to the tune of $22.40 under Cory Nakatani for trainer Barry Abrams. The son of Unusual Heat was winning for the ninth time in 55 lifetime starts and ended an 0 for 13 skid in 2010.
Double carryover for Hollywood Park for Thursday! $99,992.60 carries into the Pick 6 and a robust $41,816.53 into the Super High 5 pool! Join us for some great racing on Thursday and sign up now at http://www.horseracing-selections.com/

Zenyatta streak ends at 19 ... Goldikova wins third BC Mile
Bummer. Pretty much sums it all up. Zenyatta's streak came to a halt on Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Classic as her furious rally fell a head short to Blame. While taking nothing away from the winner, who fought her off gamely, Zenytatta was the best horse in defeat. Blame got the trip inside and Zenyatta, far back early, weaved her way in and out of traffic while swinging outside for the drive. Mike Smith did all he could and took the blame (no pun intended) after the race saying he should have put her into the race earlier. But that's racing and Blame took home the prize. Now, let all of the Horse of the Year debates begin. We can't wait to hear how ridiculous some of the thoughts and opinions will become.
How about Andy Beyer of the Daily Racing Form not even picking Zenyatta in his top three? We really thought he was a sharper handicapper than that. Must be he is developing dementia now.
Goldikova looked good yet once again taking her third Breeders' Cup Mile. This 5-year-old mare by Anabaa could be mention in Horse of the Year talk but her distance limitations to a flat mile need to be addressed. Still, she is worthy of being considered.
Calvin Borel should be given the jackass of the year award with his behavior following the Breeders' Cup Marathon on Friday. Looking more like a crazed WWF fighter than a jockey, he totally made himself look more foolish than normal with his antics. While we totally understand the emotions involved this should have been taken into the jocks room and not live on ESPN for the world to see. Not the day for it.
Heading to the races soon? Don't forget to take us with you! Daily rate starts at only $4.95 and you really shouldn't be without us. http://www.horseracing-selections.com/

Breeders' Cup buzz
The action is now heating up to a boil. With pre-entries already going down last week, we will take our normal Breeders' Cup plunge when entries and post positions are drawn on Wednesday. Of course all eyes will be on the queen, Zenyatta, when she takes the track on Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Classic. She'll be out to keep her perfect record in tact at 20-20.
The Oak Tree meeting at Hollywood Park concluded their meeting on Sunday and the soon to be released numbers figure to be quite frightening. Perhaps that's why closing day was scheduled on holloween.
Trainer Bob Baffert unveiled a very promising 3-year-old colt, Alcindor, in Saturday's 3rd race under Martin Garcia. By Unbridled's Song (Unbridled) this colt should be watched as he goes through his connections and may have a bright future ahead of him.
Gone Rebel took down the Anoakia on Sunday for trainer Vladimir Cerin and was ridden to her win by Patrick Valenzuela for her owners Holly and David Wilson. This filly looked good winning and was coming off a dismal try in the Grade I Darley Debutante.

Terrell Owens way too close to star Zenyatta
We were quite disturbed to see the photos and read the articles that have been running in the media the last few days. The well publicized visit by the NFL star, Terrell Owens when he visited the barn of trainer John Shirreffs and in return got a first hand look at the mare and took several photo ops with the 19-19 win machine. Not that we doubt Owens' ability on the playing field. He's a good receiver and can win you football games. It's his on field antics and what he does off the football field. He's a distractor and "cancer" and will take advantage of every chance and opportunity to promote himself and himself only. If racing is looking for ways to attract attention, Zenyatta certainly doesn't need any assistance from Mr. Owens. She's way too classy for that.
Blind Luck continues her preparations for the Breeders' Cup and drilled a snappy 1:01.20 at Hollywood Park on Sunday. With Joel Rosario up, her connections were quite please with the drill and deemed her to be right on schedule.

Zenyetta, Blame drill for Breeders' Cup
Blame drilled a solid half-mile on Sunday over the Keeneland track in a snappy :47.60 in preparation for the November 6 Breeders' Cup Classic under his normal exercise rider Casey Chavez. His connections were happy with the drill and stated he was right on target for his next start.
Zenyatta was also seen at Hollywood Park earlier in the week and also drilled for her upcoming appearance in either the Breeders' Cup Classic or Ladies Classic. Her connections were happy with the way she looks and is preparing for her next start. Zenyatta will be looking to keep her perfect streak in tact which now stands at 19.
As reported last week, the new dirt track is progressing nicely at Santa Anita and projections have the new course being completed by December 6th which will allow several weeks of "settling" and allowing horses to train before any adjustments need to be made for opening day on December 26th.
The 2010 Grade II $150,000 Oak Tree Mile on Saturday went to the outsider, Fantastic Pick for jockey Corey Nakatani and trainer James Lloyd. Owned by Ford, Maycock and Smole the 3-year-old gelding was winning for the fifth time in 15 lifetime efforts and paid a hefty $46.20 to his backers while he edged out the promising local debut try of Blue Panis who was coming here from France. The invader did everything but win after cutting out the pace under Joe Talamo.
Sunday's feature the Grade III $100,000 Harold C. Ramser Handicap was taken by the upsetter Go Forth North under David Flores for trainer A.A. Avila and owners Lo-Bo Racing, Pyle and Summer of Fun Stable. The 3-year-old filly now has won a Graded race and is black type.

Santa Anita begins on new dirt track
Construction was to have begun on Santa Anita's new dirt track on Monday, October 11 according to the tracks website. The beginning of the removal of the synthetic course has begun and the target date to have the new dirt down is December 6, 2010 in time for horses to begin training and for track officials to work out any bugs or kinks before the meeting opens. This is indeed good news for serious horse players and horsemen alike. For those who would like to follow the progress of the removal of the synthetic course you can click here.
Sidney's Candy was scratched from Saturday's Grade II $150,000 Oak Tree Mile due to a pending sale of the 3-year-old colt by Candy Ride. Trainer John Sadler confirmed the sale and said the transaction should be concluded this week.
Wednesday's card at Hollywood Park was canceled due to a heavy rain that fell onto the track and caused flooding which washed sand and debris onto parts of the backstretch. Riders and track management were concerned for the safety of both horses and riders so the card was canceled about 1:40 P.M.
Liberian Freighter ran perhaps the best race of his career when winning the Grade II $150,000 Oak Tree Mile Saturday, October 9 under Martin Garcia for trainer Neil Drysdale at $46.40. The 5-year-old gelding was winning for the eighth time in 22 lifetime starts for owners Dougan Estate of Nahem and Winner.
The Grade I $250,000 Ancient Title run on Saturday, October 9 was taken down by Smiling Tiger under Russell Baze for trainer Jeff Bonde. The lone 3-year-old in the field vs. older rewarded his backers with a $9.20 payoff.
Monday's Holiday Grade III $100,000 Morvich Handicap was taken by Quick Enough under Patrick Valenzuela for trainer Doug O'Neill . While a recent claim by his current connections, the son of High Brite has paid quick dividends for his new owners and should be seen again real soon.

Rachel out, Zenyatta continues the parade
Rachel Alexandra was retired from racing which is past, old news to some. But lets not forget that this wonderful and talented filly did much for racing and will certainly go down in the history books as one of the good ones. Despite the match racing not unfolding with Zenyatta, she was a monster in 2009 and her accomplishments were many. Congrats and thank you to her connections for having down a wonderful job with her.
Speaking of Zenyatta who remains perfect at 19 wins from 19 career starts. The now 6-year-old mare continues to do what she has to do and that is win her races. Saturday's triumph in the Grade I $250,000 Lady's Secret added to her bankroll which is now over a whopping 6,254,580. Ridden again by Mike Smith, the daughter of Street Cry returned $2.20 at 1/9 odds and covered the 1 1/6th miles in 1:42.97. Not much left to say as we are running out of things to say about her except she is always fun to watch her strut her stuff. Next stop will be the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Zenyatta has to be given credit for the huge attendance at Hollywood Park on Saturday which drew 25,837. Was it the Zenyatta hat or the mare herself that was responsible for the draw? We'll let you figure that one out for yourself.
Another local star, Lookin at Lucky made good when he scored in Saturday's Grade II $500,000 Indiana Derby. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia, the son of Smart Strike took a positive step forward for his next appearance in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Jaycito perhaps should be looking for some flights to the Breeders' Cup as well with his sharp looking win in Saturday's Grade I $250,000 Norfolk Stakes. Overpowering the race favorite late, J P's Gusto, Jaycito is a son of Victory Gallop and was ridden by Mike Smith for trainer Mike Mitchell. Jaycito paid $8.40 for the win.
The Grade I $250,000 Yellow Ribbon was taken by the invading Hibaayeb for trainer Saeed bin Suroor under Rafael Bejarano. Paying $8.60 for the win, the 3-year-old filly snapped back to life after appearing to be tailing off some in Great Britain. She has now won 3 races from 11 lifetime efforts.
Bob Baffert's Richard Candy is the Rodney Dangerfield of racing. He gets no respect. Winning the Grade I $250,000 Goodwood under Alonso Quinonez, the son of Lemon Drop Kid was allowed to postward at odds of 8/1 to return $18.60 for the win.
Thinking of going to the races anytime soon? Don't forget to take us with you! http://www.horseracing-selections.com/

Pedroza, favorites keep rolling along at Fairplex Park
Martin Pedroza continues his torrid pace at Fairplex Park as he has sprinted away from the rest of the jockey colony. With the final week of racing head, it is safe to say Pedroza has all but wrapped up another riding title here at the Los Angeles County Fair. The 40-year-old something rider looks to be in his 20's the way he handles the horses, turns and other riders around these parts. Yes, call Martin Pedroza "Mr. Pomona" because he certainly is.
How about the ride Patrick Valenzuela gave Clubhouse Ride on Sunday in the $115,000 Barretts Juvenile? The two-year-old colt by Candy Ride (Ride The Rails) was winning for the second time in his career, coming off a solid good looking maiden win at Del Mar for trainer Clifford Sise. Clubhouse Ride unleashed a powerhouse move down the backside to vie for the lead and draw away for a sharp win. This all came after a rough start in which Clubhouse Ride was bumped hard leaving the gate to race well behind the field early on. Had he failed to kick it in, he would have had a built in excuse which makes his win here more impressive. The owners Six-S Racing Stables seem to have a nice colt on their hands and should be followed up the ladder.

Opening week at Fairplex Park
Well the dirt racing has returned at Fairplex Park at the Los Angeles County Fair and we can't say enough about being able to handicap on the organic stuff. The course has played fair with speed being given the advantage early on. However, come-from-behinders have been fairing okay too so all in all it's been a very fair track from what we have seen. The weather has been awesome and we are looking for exciting days ahead with some great racing and stakes action.
One of the reasons we have always been a fan of this meeting is the racing. There is a vast quantity of shippers coming in from out of state and that brings its fair share of low level claimers to town. Old fashioned racing and race riding as the jockeys and trainers compete for better purse money. This aspect of the game seems to heighten the excitement level and ups the handicapping game to a renewed level as well. One negative aspect of this is that Martin Pedroza always seems to get overbet on everything he rides. Since he tends to ride the best horse in most races, he's a hard guy to beat. However when you do find a competitive horse that Pedroza isn't riding, chances are you'll find good value.
Martin Pedroza has done his early sprint away from the gate and is already well in front in the jockeys race. Doug O'Neill and Peter Miller are going head to head right now in the trainers race.
Opening day offered up the $50,000 Beverly J. Lewis stakes which was won by the Bob Baffert trained Subsidized under Martin Pedroza at $3.80. This daughter of Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) looked good taking the field in this 6 1/2 furlong contest and should be heard from again real soon.
Saturday's $50,000 E. B. Johnston was won by the odds on favorite U R All That I Am under Martin Pedroza for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The 4-year-old filly was reversing a losing streak of three in a row but looked back to her old self here as she was well bet on at 2-5 to return $2.80.
Sunday's $50,000 Bangles and Beads was won by Via Veneto under Martin Pedroza for trainer Bob Baffert to return $3.20 to her backers. The daughter of Orientate (Mt. Livermore) was winning for the third time in 12 career outings for her owner Donald Dizney.

Closing day at Del Mar. Hello Fairplex Park
As they say, no rest for the wicked. We put the wrap on Del Mar on Wednesday and jump right into Fairplex Park on Thursday. While Del Mar is always one of our favorite tracks we can't say we had a good time there this season as it was a sub-par meeting for us with below normal percentages for us. While it's not fair to blame the synthetic surface for our bad numbers since everybody has to handicap on the same surface, we sure would like to see some consistency in the track.
Speaking on consistency, how about the Del Mar Stewards call on Sunday when they let Twirling Candy stand after fouling Summer Movie? That is perhaps one of the worst calls we have seen in the game since we got involved 40-years ago. Brutal.
However, the meeting provided lots of bright spots like normal and all and all was a successful one. Kudos to management with them offering a minimum 50-cent Pick 4 which helped increase the handle of the Pick 4 and to great coverage on Facebook, which allowed fans to be apart of racing and comment on their experience at the track. One thing we could do without next year however is the "Cougar" promotion as the track promotes the older, affluent breast implanted and botox injected women that want to hook up and hang out with the with the younger guys trackside. Del Mar Management seemed fascinated in posting picks on Facebook and having one of these ladies crowned "Miss Cougar." Enough of this nonsense.
Congratulations to leading trainer Doug O'Neill and leading jockey Joel Rosario for a job and meeting well done. Rosario and Rafael Bejarano battled until the final race as Rosario prevailed by hanging a nose at the wire and winning the title. O'Neill had wrapped up the title long ago.
Rafael Bejarano certainly didn't look like a leading rider candidate with his ride aboard Late Cuddle at odds on in the 5th race on Friday. Bejarano had the mare 4, 5-wide throughout and never did try to get her inside. Perhaps next time we'll see a rider switch on the Jerry Hollendorfer trained mare.
Those who saw Tell a Kelly win Saturday's Darley Debutante witnessed a visually impressive performance by a very talented filly. Racing for the John Sadler stable under Alonso Quinonez, the daughter of Tapit drew away for a powerful score, beating the undefeated Wickedly Perfect easily to pay $11.20. This filly needs to be followed as it looks like owners Ike and Dawn Thrash have a nice one.
The Del Mar Derby Sunday was won by Twirling Candy but result shouldn't have been allowed to stand up. Those that haven't seen this race need to see it. No mistake the 1/5 shot was best, but the son of Candy Ride completely took out Summer Movie and should have been DQ'ed for his win. The connections of John Sadler and Jenny Craig remained classy as owner Jenny Craig approached and apologized to the owners of Summer Movie for the incident. Twirling Candy remains undefeated and is now 4 for 4.
The Torrey Pines was won by Switch for the popular connections of John Sadler and Joel Rosario as the daughter of Quiet American took home the winners share of the $100,000 purse. Switch was winning for the third time in eight lifetime starts.
Closing day on Wednesday saw J P's Gusto win the Grade I $250,000 Del Mar Futurity under Patrick Valenzuela for trainer David Hofmans. The 2-year-old son of Successful Appeal looked quite powerful in his win and looks to have serious designs on the future as it appeared from his effort he can go further in distance.

Asmussen agrees, Rachel not at same place she was last year
Rachel Alexandra, reigning horse of the year was upset on Sunday in the Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga by Persistently, a 4-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken, who is owned and bred by the Phipps Stable and trained by Shug McGaughey. Rachel Alexandra had never before run 1 1/4 miles, though she did win last year’s Preakness at 1 3/16 miles. Breaking from post 2 under Borel, Rachel Alexandra went to the front and was stalked intently by Life At Ten, who was within one-half length of her through splits of 23.66 seconds, 47.73, and 1:12.02. Life At Ten eventually tired to be third, beaten by 10 1/4 lengths.
It was the third loss for Rachel Alexandra in five starts this year. And it confirmed many people’s suspicions that she is not the same horse who went 8 for 8 last year, beating males three times.
“She isn’t exactly where she was last year and hopefully she can get back there,” said Steve Asmussen, trainer of Rachel Alexandra. For the sake of racing we hope so.
Owned by Jess Jackson, who did not attend the race, issued a statement about the result, but not her future.
“We are disappointed in the result, as we are sure her countless fans are, but we are certainly not disappointed in her,” Jackson said. “She is still a superstar in our hearts and minds. The old sports adage applies …. on any given Sunday, anything can happen.”
The $1-million Grade I Pacific Classic was taken again by Richard's Kid on Saturday under Mike Smith who won the race last year for the same connections, trainer Bob Baffert and Mike Smith. This year instead of paying off at 24.40-1, Richard's Kid paid $11.60 to his backers and the 5-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid was winning for the eighth time from 26 lifetime starts.
El Brujo took down the Grade I $300,000 Pat O'Brien under Joel Rosario for trainer Bob Baffert who had a spectacular weekend at the beachside track. returning $9.60 to his backers, the son of Candy Ride ran his rivals off their feet for owner Arnold Zetcher.
Sunday's Grade II Del Mar Handicap was won by Champ Pegasus in a perfectly timed ride by Joel Rosario for trainer Richard Mandella for Diamond A Racing Corp and Vargas. The winner paid $5.

Santa Anita goes back to dirt! Amen!
Well, it is going to happen and we couldn't be happier. Santa Anita will be going back to a dirt surface and it will begin shortly. The 2010 Oak Tree meeting will be run at Hollywood Park during the renovation. The 2011 Oak Tree meeting could return at that time to Santa Anita or it could be run at either Del Mar or Hollywood Park We understand that talks are under way now to decide where the meet will be held.
Could the Del Mar Polytrack be anymore inconsistent than it has been so far this meeting? We doubt it.
The $75,000-added Green Flash Handicap run on Wednesday could have been a graded stakes with California Flag and Cost of Freedom in the line-up and boy was it a thriller. California Flag took down the winners share of the purse posting a nose win for trainer Brian Koriner and Mike Smith for owners Hi Card Ranch. The Avenue of Flags gelding returned $4.20 to his backers.

Sidney's Candy and Wasted Tears put on shows
Epic performances this past weekend by Sidney's Candy and Wasted Tears (left) at Del Mar.Saturday it was all about Sidney's Candy who drew off and easily handled his rivals in the Grade II La Jolla Handicap in track record time of 1:39.52. Under Joel Rosario for trainer John Sadler, the 3-year-old colt owned by the Craig Family Trust redeemed himself from a disappointing runner-up effort last out and returned $4.80 to his backers. On Sunday it was Wasted Tears' turn to display her grit while gutting out a nose win in the Grade II John C. Mabee after taking the field wire to wire for trainer Bart Evans. The 5-year-old mare by Najran (Runaway Groom) was winning for the 11th time in 16 lifetime races and is now a perfect five for five in 2010.
Just because you pay $1-million for a racehorse doesn't mean it will turn out to be a runner. Just ask Bob Baffert and owners Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable after Flagship, a $1-million Keeneland sales purchase checked in a uninspiring third in his debut on Wednesday at Del Mar. The 3-year-old colt by El Prado had good works leading up to the race but simply didn't fire. Perhaps he simply needed the race. Time will tell.
Goggles McCoy did what he had to do in winning the $100,000 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar on Wednesday but we left unimpressed by his win here. Wiring his rivals under Russell Baze, the Steve Sherman trained runner returned $2.80 and left us wanting to see more before we can give him kudos on his win. The 3-year-old gelded son of In Excess is now a perfect 3 for 3 in his career.

Rachel Alexandra vs. Zenyatta
Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. One thing we have found is that no matter what name you bring up, there is plenty of passion on both sides. From east coast to west coast, just like jazz vs. rap, the Dodgers vs. the Giants there is going to be plenty of debate on who is the best. Rachel fans love Rachel and Zenyatta fans love Zenyatta. That is the way it is suppose to be. But lets not forget that both of these ladies are quite special and have done a great service to the industry, something that track management has failed to do. Instead of bashing each other, lets recognize that and applaud the other camp too. We can all say that one is better than the other but when sides start bashing the connections then the name calling begins and how petty is that really? If we race fans and horsemen want to start bashing, how about we bash track management?
You don't have to be a Dodger fan to like the way Gibson Home Run scored in his debut on August 5th at Del Mar in the 8th race for trainer Peter Miller. Scoring at the maiden claiming level of $32k, it's no doubt that maybe Gibson Home Run has once or twice came back to the barn the way Kurt rounded the bases on that fateful evening but he got the job done under P. Val at $7.60.
American Story looked solid taking down the 2nd race at Del Mar on August 6th as another Bob Baffert trainee scored under Martin Garcia at $6.60. The filly by Ghostzapper looked solid and may be heard from again soon before Fairplex opens.
Zenyatta ran her streak up to 18 in a row, while remaining perfect when the daughter of Street Cry took down the winners share of the Grade I $300,000 Clement Hirsch on Saturday August 7. With slow fractions to chase and a zealous ride by David Flores aboard Dance to My Tune pushing Zenyatta wide into the stretch, the mare did what she has always done and that was to win. What a special mare she has turned out to be for connections of trainer John Shirreffs and owners Mr. and Mrs. Jerry S. Moss. How anyone can say anything negative about this mare is beyond us.
She was only winning her first race in the United States but Late Cuddle sure did look impressive for Jerry Hollendorfer and owner Mrs. S K Johnston, Jr. Ridden under Rafael Bejarano the 5-year-old mare by Postponed paid an overlayed price of $15.60 to her backers. She may like it here and turn out to be a useful sort. keep your eyes on her in future starts.
Too early for Derby talk? Not really. J P's Gusto looked nice winning the Grade II Best Pal on Sunday at Del Mar under Patrick Valenzuela for trainer David Hofmans and owners Gem Inc. The son of Successful Appeal has nice breeding and talent. He's worth following.

All set for Zenyatta on Saturday
The super mare, Zenyatta is set to stretch her unbeaten streak to 18 in the Grade I $300,000 Clement Hirsch Saturday at Del Mar when the daughter of Street Cry faces five badly overmatched rivals. Zenyatta was schooled in the paddock on Thursday and she looked like her super self as she took in the sights without raising a hair. She'll be handled as usual by Mike Smith.
Was anyone else growing tired of the endless pictures that Del Mar management was posting of the "Cougar Women" on the internet? All over Facebook and the Del Mar web page, the promotion was run in accordance with the Cougar Handicap on Friday evening and showed older women like the TV show trying to lure younger guys. We bet that the late trainer Charlie Whittingham and Cougar himself were rolling over in their graves. Perhaps we can make the suggestion that next season Del Mar can make any empty on track suites into massage suites and charge a flat rate for a day at the races and a free hookup. Don't get us wrong. We are all for bring young blood to the track and attracting new fans but this promotion is so not the way to do it. By the way, the race was won by Temple City in wire-to-wire fashion under Joe Talamo for trainer Carla Gaines.
Dakota Phone ended his winless streak at 15 when the gelded son of Zavata took down the Grade II $200,000 San Diego Handicap. Joel Rosario was aboard the Jerry Hollendorfer trainee and he was winning for the first time in three years after going 0 for seven in 2010. He paid $11.40 to his backers.
Smiling Tiger won the Grade I Bing Crosby and took home the winners share of the $250,000 under Victor Espinoza for trainer Jeff Bonde but things got a bit easier when the favorite Cost of Freedom broke badly and never saw the lead. Smiling Tiger paid $17.80.

Old fashioned bitch session
Mind if we vent for a few? Good. We are going to.
Never mind we have started the opening week at Del Mar without a winner. Yes you are correct. We are now officially 0 for 10 with one horse being in the money. How's that for 'capping? Our lone horse in the money came in the 9th race on Sunday when He Be Fire N Ice ran second, losing a head-bobber on the line at 5/2. Good news is perhaps we are ready to bust out of the slump.
We keep saying it. All we want is a fair and consistent surface to handicap and wager on at Del Mar and thus far it hasn't been the case. Speed holds, then it's a rally-wide biased track. Even the horsemen are split. Some say it's too deep and slow while others say it's too hard and fast. We hope things will turn around this upcoming week or it could be a lean Del Mar meeting.
Get well wishes to Tyler Baze who got nailed behind the gate when his mount tossed her head and hit him in the face. The result was several missing teeth, facial fractures and a eye that was swollen shut. No telling how long he'll be out but it could be the entire Del Mar meeting. Remember last year Tyler missed Del Mar when he broke a finger and wasn't able to hold on to the reins. Incredible bad luck as Tyler was coming off a nice Hollywood Park ending and was starting the Del Mar meeting quickly.
Are we don't bitching yet? Nope.
Can't believe in the stupidity of allowing Patrick Valenzuela a license to ride again here in California. The CHRB agreed to give this troubled rider another license to ride and of course the stipulations are very similar to the ones he's failed to adhere to in the past. Frustrating fact is Valenzuela is a very gifted jock that can do it all. Come from off the pace and he can get a horse to relax on the front end like nobody else. Problem is he keeps messing up and has never come out to publicly admit he has a problem. Like the trainers and owners that continue to ride him, Patrick is in denial. We are sure there will be more to this later on. We are now officially on the P.Val countdown until he misses his first day.
By the way, what's with the stewards now becoming handicappers? Yes, you heard us. Not only are they looking at video tape and deciding if a horse should be disqualified, but they are also figuring out if the horse bothered was cost a position in the race. Trevor was heard making this announcement on Saturday. "While Such and Such did duck in, the incident did not alter the original order of finish" Hey! How do they know? While they admit the foul, evidently they have become professional handicappers now to and can handicap a race. Holy cow! Back in the day if you fouled a horse you came down and were placed behind the horse you fouled. But like everything else, those days are gone.
Okay, a bit more positive news!
Rachel Alexandra looked good on Saturday beating up some average fillies in the Lady's Secret at Monmouth Park. With over $1-million wagered on her to show, Rachel did what she had to do and covered the distance in 1:49 3/5 over a wet strip. her margin of victory was deceiving as she probably could have won by more had she been pushed by Borel. She has now won two straight since losing her first two starts in 2010 and her next race is uncertain.
Readers of this blog and HorseRacing-selections.com clients are reminded to keep an eye on the barn of Bob Baffert this Del Mar meeting. He has another very deep stable of two-year-olds and we should keep seeing these youngsters run strong races throughout the meeting.
How impressive was Twirling Candy on opening day, taking down the $100,000 Oceanside? The son of Candy Ride is now undefeated from three starts for trainer John Sadler and could either remain at Del Mar or ship out of state for his next start.
The Usual Q.T. continues his winning ways by taking the Grade I $300,000 Eddie Read over the Del Mar lawn. James Cassidy has done a great job with this gelding and while always being a capable trainer, has really impressed us with the way he has handled this gelded son of Unusual Heat. The Usual Q.T. returned $4.80 to his backers and was ridden as usual by Victor Espinoza.
The gutty California-bred Bold Chieftain may have run his last race. The 7-year-old just didn't fire in Sunday's running of the $100,000 California Dreamin' Handicap which was taken by Bruce's Dream at $5.80. Sent off as the 6/5 favorite, Bold Chieftain was never in it and finished up the track under Russell Baze.
Evening Jewel capped off a wonderful weekend for trainer James Cassidy when she won the Grade II $150,000 San Clemente Handicap under Victor Espinoza. Perfectly timed, the daughter of Northern Afleet outran her rivals to return $5.40 and has now won five from 11 lifetime starts.

Del Mar opens tomorrow
Well, here we go. Another meeting down, another one beginning. Del Mar opens it's summer meeting tomorrow and the track where the turf meets the surf is always a welcome change as a working vacation for horsemen and horse players alike. Seems like a good card but we can't help but wonder how the track is going to play. With the Polytrack being a kind of "bi-polar" surface, it changes in the morning and is completely different when racing begins in the afternoon. All we can suggest is a conservative approach for the first day or so and see how things play out.
Congrats to jockey Joel Rosario and trainer Doug O'Neill for winning the titles at Hollywood Park. Hollywood Park was down in handle and attendance this meeting, which should come as no surprise with not only the economy but the cancellations due to a horse shortage and lack of entries. All sources handle was down a staggering 10%. The track did not announce average on-track attendance and handle figures. The decline in overall handle was close to expectations, according to the track's president, Jack Liebau.
Trainer Bob Baffert is once again deep with promising two-year-olds in his barn this summer and he unleashed a few closing week at Hollywood Park. A Z Warrior was one such promising filly by Bernardini who scored impressively on July 15th in the 5th race under Martin Garcia at $4.40. The filly won nicely for owners Zayat Stables LLC and should be watched as she climbs the ladder.Smash made his debut a winning one and the son of Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector) won scary good as he was green as grass under Martin Garcia for owner Kaleem S Shah. This $400k yearling purchase could be an early KY Derby favorite and is indeed another one that should be watched as he returns and goes through his conditions.
Trainer Kristin Mulhall saddled Westwood Pride to a nice win on Friday evening and this filly by Pleasantly Perfect scored gamely in her second start in the U.S. under Rafael Bejarano for owners Juliana and Rustin Kretz. This filly is another that should be watched when she returns, probably at the Del Mar meeting.

Final week of racing at Hollywood Park
Hollywood Park wraps up the 2010 Spring/Summer meeting with a four day week on a Thursday through Sunday schedule. Seems like it was only yesterday that Hollywood Park opened the doors to the spring/summer meeting and now horsemen will head down to Del Mar where the turf meets the surf for the 37-day meeting which begins on Wednesday, July 21.
Del Mar is offering a late Pick 4 for a minimum .50 cent play which is a good wager to have to offer the young crowd that often attends the races at Del Mar. This of course will be in addition to the traditional $1 Pick 4.
Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer could be sidelined the remainder of the year due to ankle issues that have prompted his connections to take him out of training, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday. Drosselmeyer will undergo a bone scan later this week.
Lookin At Lucky worked six furlongs in 1:12.60 at Santa Anita on Saturday, moving the Preakness Stakes winner closer to a potential start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 1.
Trainer Bob Baffert unveiled another promising runner from the barn when the Zayat Stables Z Z Warrior made his debut on Saturday in the 4th race under Martin Garcia. The 3-year-old son of Dixie Union paid $4 to his backers and was a very impressive winner at first asking. He should be followed up the ladder.
Later in the afternoon, the Baffert trained E Z's Gentleman took down the Triple Bend Handicap for owner Arnold Zetcher under Martin Pedroza to provide Pedroza with his 1,000th career win. E Z's Gentleman paid $9.80 and looked good in the win, winning for the 4th time in 15 career starts.
This years Hollywood Gold Cup went to Awesome Gem who was able to overcome a slow pace under David Flores to win the $500,000 Grade I event. Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Craig Dollase finally got his Gold Cup win this year as the son of Awesome Again broke his 0 for 4 drought in 2010.
Dawnie Macho looked good winning the $100,000 Landaluce under Joe Talamo as the 2-year-old daughter of Macho Uno was making her west coast debut for owners Gary and Cecil Barber since a private purchase after breaking her maiden at Arlington Park in stylish fashion. John Sadler appears to have a good on on his hands here.

Blane Schvaneveldt dead at 76; Global Hunter stable
Blane Schvaneveldt, the winningest trainer in Los Alamitos history and the champion Quarter Horse trainer in the nation 12 times, has died of complications from a heart arrhythmia, his family announced Monday.
Schvaneveldt was hospitalized last Friday after showing signs of distress while having breakfast in the track kitchen. Subsequent medical tests at Los Alamitos Medical Center revealed that Schvaneveldt had limited brain activity. He was taken off life support Sunday afternoon.
Global Hunter remains in stable condition following surgery on Monday.
Global Hunter, who was pulled up with an injury to his right front ankle after winning Sunday's Grade 2 American Handicap, underwent surgery at Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic in Los Olivos, Calif., on Monday to stabilize the leg, trainer A.C. Avila said.
Avila said a plate and 16 screws were inserted into the injured leg, and that early prognosis was positive.
"So far, it's okay," he said shortly after the surgery was completed. "He didn't have any leg infection or founder."
Jockey Scott Stevens, the older brother of retired Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, Scott Stevens has been moved from the intensive care unit at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn., to a private room to finish his recovery from injuries suffered in a spill at Canterbury Park on Friday, his agent, Chad Anderson, said on Monday. He is expected to remain at the hospital for one more week.
Stevens, 49, sustained six broken ribs, punctured both of his lungs, broke both sides of his collarbone, and has a lacerated spleen, according to Anderson.
Hollywood Park once again was forced to cancel racing on Thursday due to a lack of entries received by horseman. It continues to puzzle us as to why there is a shortage of horses when Hollywood Park management reported on Facebook that 400 horses worked out this past week. Also, Hollywod Park continues to card extra races on weekends when perhaps it would be in the best interest to run 7-8 races on a race card.
Race fans that saw the Grade III Hollywood Park Juvenile Championship on Monday, July 5 witnessed two very nice and promising colts as the two-year-old J P's Gusto outran Western Mood to take home the winners share of $100,000 purse. Trained by David Hofmans, J P's Gusto is by Successful Appeal and paid $3.40 for the win. Both colts should be followed very closely as they have ability and come from top notch stables.

O'Neill won't appeal, vacation in order
Okay, so this is how it goes. Trainer Doug O'Neill said Friday that he has dropped an appeal of a 15-day suspension for a total carbon dioxide overage in Illinois in April. The penalty will run from Wednesday through July 14. But, instead of running his horses in his assistants name, Leandro Mora, all of O'Neill's horses will remain in the barn until the end of the suspension on July 14.
O'Neill said he spent Friday afternoon consulting with his owners about the implications of the suspension and that a majority of them were not in favor of him running horses in the name of his assistant, Leandro Mora, during the suspension. O'Neill said the policy of having no runners also would apply to stakes horses, including Enriched in the $150,000 American Handicap on July 4.
Since O'Neill already has had 134 starters at the Hollywood Park meeting, this stinks of O'Neill's way of trying to hurt and or prevent Hollywood Park from being able to fill races with a horse shortage that has already plagued Southern California.
We are glad to see that late Sunday Hollywood Park was able to fill both Thursday's and Friday's race cards without any hitches and hope the rest of the Hollywood Park meeting goes off without any more cancellations of race cards due to horse shortages.
One has to wonder how Turning Top was allowed to go off at 4/1 in Saturday's Beverly Hills Handicap and pay a robust $10.40 for her win. Winning for the fourth time in a row now for trainer Simon Callaghan, under Brice Blanc, this 4-year-old filly is now a Grade III Stakes winner. Look for lots more of her down the road.
The Usual Q.T. returned to life in Sunday's fifth race at $3.20 and Unzip Me at her streak halted in Sunday's Robert B. Kerlan Memorial Handicap vs. the boys. While running a winning race, she just failed to hold off the charges of both My Summer Slew and Stoneside late.
Heading to the races soon? Take us with you so you'll be cashing tickets at the window! http://www.horseracing-selections.com/

Oak Tree to remain at Santa Anita in 2010
At Tuesday's CHRB meeting held at Hollywood Park it was announced that this seasons Oak Tree meeting will remain at Santa Anita but will more than likely be moved to Del Mar beginning in 2011. An eleventh hour deal saved Oak Tree from having to possibly move the meeting to Hollywood Park in October. Frank Stronach said he won't offer Oak Tree a lease after this year however.
Are we the only one that has a sinking feeling about the future of California horse racing? After listening to the CHRB board members and several speakers at Tuesday's meeting we weren't left with that much hope regarding the future.
And what a shame too with Rachel Alexandra back in winning form and Zenyatta, fresh off her Vanity win. While there are some positives happening in racing, they are few and far between in California.

Zenyatta remains perfect
Wow is pretty much all we can say. Having to watch her win in front of a T.V. at a 80th birthday party for a family friend with about 50 or so guests, many of which knew nothing about the sport, we have to admit we thought she had met her demise at the 1/8th pole in the Vanity. "Too much to do with this amount of weight," we thought. But somehow, she did what she had to do under Mike Smith and that was to pull out the win in the $250,000 Grade I race. Giving the game runner-up St Trinians nine pounds, Zenyatta was in front at the wire by a half-length. The daughter of Street Cry covered the 1 1/8th mile distance in 1:49.01 and returned $3 to her backers. What's next for this great mare is uncertain but we can't wait to find out!

Rachel Alexandra and Rail Trip back on the beam with wins
Rachel Alexandra and Rail Trip, two powerhouse runners both won their races on Saturday and are now setting their sights on upcoming races.
Rebounding from a pair of second-place finishes that began her 4-year-old campaign, Rachel Alexandra asserted her clear superiority over an outclassed field of four opponents in the Fleur de Lis, winning by 10 1/2 lengths over longshot Distinctive Dixie. She raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.78, a second and a half off the track record.
Rail Trip did not need his best effort to win Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 Californian Stakes at Hollywood Park. At the eighth pole, when Rail Trip was 2 1/2 lengths in front of seven rivals, jockey Rafael Bejarano knew the job was finished. In the final sixteenth, Bejarano allowed Rail Trip to cruise to the finish, winning by 2 3/4 lengths. "I had so much horse," Bejarano said. "I let him gallop and get him ready for the next one."
The next one is the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 10, which can only further enhance Rail Trip's status as the leading older male in California.
Perhaps overshadowed a bit this past week was She'll Heir's race in the $60,000 Cinderella at Hollywood Park. Posting her second career win from as many starts, the daughter of Wildcat Heir was making her local debut after breaking her maiden in Kentucky. She looked quite good, too, as the Vladimir Cerin filly overpowered her rivals under Rafael Bejarano and returned $3.40 for the win.

Good luck to the ladies this weekend!
Good luck to both Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta who will be making starts this weekend. First will come Rachel, who will attempt her first win in 2010 when she takes on her rivals in the Grade 2, $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap. Zenyatta comes next when she makes her start Sunday in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap, in search of her 17th consecutive win.
All eyes will also be on Rail Trip Saturday in the Grade II $250,000 Californian as he tries to make amends for last years loss to Informed.
Sorry to hear about the death of Kip Deville, winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile and $3 million earner, who lost his long battle with laminitis Friday. The 7-year-old horse was euthanized at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., according to a Blood-Horse report. Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables told the Blood-Horse that the syndicate "just wanted him to live a happy life. He deserved that."

Slow pace victimizes Blind Luck in Oaks
A pedestrian like slow pace victimized Blind Luck in Sunday's Hollywood Oaks. In the Oaks, Blind Luck was last of five through a slow pace of 25.30 and 50.11 seconds set by the eventual third-place finisher, Camille C. Blind Luck trailed by 7 1/2 lengths with three-eighths remaining and passed three rivals. After the race, Hollendorfer said that Blind Luck "should have laid a little closer." You think? This is the second time that jock Rafael Bejarano has messed up on Blind Luck, the last time was in the Santa Anita Oaks when the same thing happened. Perhaps a change in riders is in store for next time, just to shake things up a bit?
Zenyatta fans will be holding their breath on Sunday, June 13th when the super filly makes a start in the Grade I Vanity, toting high weight of 129lbs. That is quite an impost when you consider the climate of racing these days. She'll be carrying nine pounds more than St Trinians. Zenyatta is seeking her 17th win and an unprecedented third consecutive win in the Vanity. She carried 124 pounds in the 2008 Vanity, her sixth career win, and 129 pounds in the 2009 Vanity, her 11th win.
Rachel Alexandra worked Monday morning at Churchill Downs in :49.20 in splits of 12.60 and 25 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.80, according to Churchill clocker John Nichols. It was the fifth straight Monday workout for the 4-year-old filly since she finished second in the April 30 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill.
Cost of Freedom continued his winning ways by running the opposition off their hooves in the $100,000 Grade III Los Angeles Handicap for his second straight win at $4. The John Sadler trained 7-year-old gelding by Cee's Tizzy was winning his eighth race from 15 lifetime starts and was ridden to victor by Tyler Baze for owners Gary or Cecil Barber.
It's hard to imagine stealing the purse in the Grade I $250,000 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap but that is what Acclamation did ... again ... under Christian Santiago Reyes. His previous win in the Grade II Jim Murray Handicap was accomplished the same way and the opposition allowed it to happen again when nobody went out with the son of Unusual Heat. The 4-year-old colt is trained by Don Warren and owned by EW and Judy Johnston. The winner paid a nice $8.20.

Beautiful night at Hollywood Park
Another beautiful Friday night of racing at Hollywood Park. There is something about Friday nights here and it is the feeling here they should perhaps add a night of racing to the current schedule, perhaps Saturday night too? Maybe if Oak Tree does move here to Hollywood Park come this fall we'll see some sort of experimental race scheduling.
Can't understand however that with a shortage of racing during the week that track management continues to card extra races on the weekends. With 11 races on Saturday, these races could be used during the week to help fill cards so that there aren't any days scrapped like this past Wednesday was. Hard to figure.
The gutty veteran Scottish Diamond had eight claim slips dropped in for him while winning the 3rd race on May 27. The gelded son of Storm Boot looked like he had some run left in him so perhaps you'll see him hoisted up the ladder for his new connections next time out.
Quick Friday night update! Ann's Seven wins the 5th at $32.60. Double carryover into Saturday's card?
Just how game is Tuscan Evening? Winning for the 5th straight time to add to her $899,408 bankroll, the Jerry Hollendorfer trained 5-year-old mare was ridden perfectly again by Rafael Bejarano to return $3.80 in the $250,000 Grade I Gamely. She's one gutty mare to be sure and owner William de Burgh must be quite proud of this daughter of Oasis Dream with what she has done. She has now won 11 from 26 lifetime starts.

4 day week at Hollywood Park? How about a 3 day week?
When Hollywood Park announced that Wednesday's card had to be scrapped due to a lack of entries it got us wondering yet once again. Why is it not possible that Hollywood Park go to a four day week and race Thursday through Sunday? Also, perhaps has anyone even thought that perhaps a Friday through Sunday schedule could work? The 5-6 horse fields are driving away business and handle. It has turned the sport on a sour note when horse players have to repeatedly look at these short fields with winners paying $2.80. Daily doubles have been as low as $5 and exactas paying $5 as well. Pick 3's have been in the mid to upper teens in returns as well. You get the idea. Perhaps maybe even cutting down to seven races during the week would help. Whatever the result, we need less racing, not more. Management also needs to take a serious look at not carding more than eight races on weekends when the week day race cards will suffer. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what to do. Just management that is less greedy.
Maiden followers may want to keep an eye out for Bella Palooza when the filly by Bellamy Road makes her next start Winning her debut in Wednesday's (05/19) 2nd race under Tyler Baze, the Doug O'Neil trainee looked quite solid returning $3.60 for the win. She could be a nice one and deserves to be followed.
There may not be a sharper horse on the Hollywood Parks ground right now than Unzip Me. When the 4-year-old filly won Friday nights $60,000-added Great Lady M it was her 5th win in a row for the Harris Farms, Antonsen and Valpredo owned daughter of City Zip. Her career has been well managed thus far by trainer Marty Jones and the cal-homebred is quick and has lots of heart. She won Friday night like she has a few more left in her and returned $3.80 to her backers.
Chocolate Candy returned from Kentucky and sure didn't look like the same colt that was once on the Kentucky Derby trail last spring. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee was flat and never really looked like a winner on Friday night.

Lookin At Lucky gets some luck ... finally
Saturday's running of the Grade I $1,000,000 Preakness Stakes went off pretty much as expected, Lookin at Lucky finally got a decent trip under new rider Martin Garcia who replaced regular rider Garret Gomez after a few unlucky trips in the Santa Anita Handicap and the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Bob Baffert explained he wasn't placing any blame on Gomez but rather trying to bring back the "mojo" that had been missing. While we don't blame Gomez for the Kentucky Derby ride, more of the rail post doing in the son of Smart Strike, we feel it was the rides in the Santa Anita Derby and Breeders' Cup Juvenile that prompted the change in riders. Garcia did a good job keeping the colt out of trouble and he put 'Lucky in the spot to win the race which he did at $6.80. Perhaps the surprise of the race was with Super Saver, the Kentucky Derby winner who was nowhere at the finish line under Calvin Borel. Borel was quoted after the race that the Derby winner simply "came up empty" and had nothing for the stretch. So much for the Triple Crown that Borel promised everyone after the Derby win. Next stop will be Belmont.
Rail Trip returned to Hollywood Park in fine fashion and won the Grade II Mervyn LeRoy in his first start back since last being seen in September of last year. With Rafael Bejarano on board replacing Jose Valdivia, Rail Trip won by 3 1/4-lengths and paid $3.
Zenyatta continues to work and maintain a low profile since winning the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. Her next scheduled start could be in the Grade I Vanity handicap although no word has come from her connections as of yet.
Veteran trainer Jack Van Berg who had been in the midst of a 0 for 19 streak here at Hollywood Park and a dry 2 for 104 spell in 2010 has sprung to life over the weekend when saddling Fortunate Victory on Saturday to a $70.60 win in the 7th race under Alonso Quinonez. The 0 for 29 gelding broke his maiden vs. $25k maiden claimers. Van Berg's win here helped with a Pick 6 carryover of $85,741 into Sunday's card.
If Saturday's win wasn't quite enough, Van Berg pulled off yet another shocker on Sunday when the 5-year-old gelding Court Hero made his debut a winning one under Tyler Baze at $44.80. The gelded son of Dearchy had been drilling for his debut at Los Alamitos before arriving at Hollywood Park to work three times before loading into the gate for his maiden debut. It's been our experience that when fire strikes like this for a barn that it's wise to keep an eye on starters for a few days.
This years Preakness wagering was down 11.6% from last year it has been reported by Pimlico Race Course. Last years wagering was 59,726,342 compared to 52,766,815 this year. The result is a $7-million decline.

Tanda leaves little doubt in Railbird as does Rail Trip in return
The experiment to bring back Partywithlarryz off a win in four days didn't fare well for the barn of Doug O'Neill on Wednesday (05/05). The gelding was an uninspiring 4th vs. $25k claimers. Albeit he was jumping up in class on his win from $16k.
Trainer Greg Gilchrist went out on a winning note as the popular trainer retired from racing on Wednesday (05/05) by saddling his last starter Island of Zen in the 5th race at Hollywood Park. Pretty much controlling the pace from the start, the filly streaked home at $4.20 under Joel Rosario. Gilchrist has said to be pursuing plans on being a bloodstock agent.
M One Rifle should be watched next time out as the returning Bruce Headley trained gelding didn't have a chance in his return in Thursday's second race. Breaking from the two hole, drawn outside of the classy Cost of Freedom, 'Rifle broke slowly and awkwardly allowing Cost of Freedom the easy uncontested lead. 'Rifle did try to rally but flattened out under Mike Smith. While cost of Freedom looked good winning at $6.60 for trainer John Sadler, 'Rifle had zero chance with the way the race unfolded and should be given another chance when Headley enters him back.
Friday nights card resulted in a Pick 6 carryover of $94,434.35 into Saturday's card.
Boy how impressive was Rail Trip in his return winning the Grade II $150,000 Mervyn Leroy Handicap on Saturday? Ron Ellis had this guy ready for owners Jay Em Ess Stable and Rafael Bejarano fell aboard this one replacing jockey Jose Valdivia who has left town to ride elsewhere. The gelded son of Jump Start left little doubt that he is more than ready to defend his Hollywood Gold Cup Title this year. Rail Trip returned $3 to his backers.
Pacific Avenue may be one to watch in his next start as trainer Bruce Headley may have a very nice gelding on his hands here. The debuting son of Roman Ruler (Fusaichi Pegasus) is out of Lindsay B, a Forest Wildcat mare and was bred in partnership by trainer Bruce Headley and Bolton. Making his first start in Saturday's seventh race (05/08), Pacific Avenue made a nice late move under Mike Smith to win going away. This gelding was still a bit on the green side and may improve further with racing. He returned $16.40 to his backers.
Speaking of promising debuts, Carry Gulch a recent import from Argentina looked solid under Tyler Baze wiring his rivals for trainer Peter Miller in the 8th race on Saturday (05/08). The 5-year-old son of Thunder Gulch had been working well for his local debut and was looking to add to his four in a roll streak, which he did rather impressively. He's now won six of 12 lifetime starts and may have a nice career ahead of himself here in the states.
Tanda scored quite nicely in Sunday's 7th race (05/09) Grade III $100,000 Railbird and was given a heady ride from the rail slot under Alex Solis. Trained by Dan Hendicks and owned by Tommy Huttons Dream Stable, the daughter of Sweetsouthernsaint was winning her second Grade III in a row and paid a nice $6 to her backers in the process. She beat a very well regarded Switch in the process who may have been compromised by slow fractions and a wide trip in the Railbird. Both fillies should be watched for in upcoming races.

Bits and pieces from Hollywood Park
Odds and ends from Hollywood Park ...
Thursday at Hollywood Park was interesting to say the least. Good looking win by Kayce Ace, a full sister to multiple stakes winner Colonel John who looked good breaking her maiden going 1 1/6th miles for trainer Eoin Harty. Owned by Winstar Farms her final clocking was 1:44.67.
Like longshots? How about Day with Desi ringing the bell at 71-1 for trainer George Papaproudromou under Kerwin John. Beaten a combined 48 lengths in four previous starts, the longshot returned $144, $62.80 and $23.80 across the board. Tough to come up with this one but after looking at this 4-year-old geldings past performance lines it wasn't impossible. You just needed some creative handicapping techniques in order to get there.
Noble's Promise is out of the Preakness Stakes and could start next in the June 15 St. James Palace at Ascot, a Group 1 race at about a mile on the turf. Noble's Promise finished 5th in the Kentucky Derby after taking the lead at the quarter pole in which Super Saver went on to win.
Mountaineer racetrack in West Virginia has canceled its Friday night card, according to Equibase, because of a "management decision" arising out of a dispute between horsemen and riders over losing-mount fees. Not a good situation for either side in very tough economical times.

Kentucky Oaks and Derby quite different
Why is it that year after year the Kentucky Oaks seems to be much more formfull and easier to handicap? Last year was Rachel Alexandra and this year we had Blind Luck. Each year seems to have one, maybe two standouts while the Derby on the other hand is more like a rodeo of twenty or so rowdy three-year-old boys heading to a frat party. We completely overlooked the winner, Super Saver and perhaps maybe it's because he looked just like 11 or 12 other horses in the race. While we eliminated both Lookin at Lucky and Sidney's Candy because of post positions, the rest just looked the same to us. Too bad Lookin at Lucky didn't have a better post as we feel he was the best three-year-old in the race and simply didn't have a chance to show it.
Horses that may start in the Preakness Stakes are: Aikenite, A Little Warm, Bushwhacked, Caracortado, Dublin, Hurrican Ike, Ice Box, Jackson Bend, Lookin at Lucky, Paddy O Prado, Pleasant Prince, Schoolyard Dreams, Super Saver and Turf Melody. Of course it is still quite early, but we'd have to back Lookin at Lucky at this point should he emerge from the Derby in okay shape.
The 2010 Kentucky Derby showed an increase in ratings and that is good news for the sport that so desperately needs a shot in the arm. Ratings drew an overnight 10.3 and 23 share which is up 1% from last years Derby. Last years Kentucky Derby was the most watched in 20 years, and this years running was the most watched in 18 years so perhaps something positive is going on huh?
Great weather and racing at Hollywood Park this weekend. See you back at the track on wednesday!

Rachel just not the same horse in 2010
We are convinced after watching Friday's Grade II $400,000 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs that Rachel Alexandra just isn't the same filly she was in 2009. Yet, anyways. The pedestrian like fractions that were set (:24.79 and :48.81) and the fact she didn't or couldn't pull clear through the stretch is indication enough. This is now her second straight defeat in 2010. The winner, Unrivaled Belle covered the 1 1/6th mile in 1:42.97 and paid $20.80. The daughter of Unbridled's Song is trained by Bill Mott and was ridden by Kent Desormeaux.

Mullins and O'Neill an embarrassment to training
Here we go again. Southern California based trainers Jeff Mullins and Doug O'Neill have been given suspensions and fines by state regulatory agencies after positive testings in excess of the permitted level of total carbon dioxide.
According to the CHRB, Mullins has been given a 30 day suspension beginning on May 9 and fined $2,500 after Pathbreaking tested positive with a level of 37.9 millimoles per liter, above the permitted threshold of 37 millimoles.
O'Neill has been suspended for 15 days, beginning on May 9 and fined $1,000 after Stephen's Got Hope tested in excess of the 37 millimoles.
Mullins is said to be thinking of appealing his case according to his attorney, Karen Hughes.

Opening weekend at Hollywood Park
Can anyone tell me why Hollywood Park would open on Wednesday to some momentum and then be dark on Thursday? It's okay to go to a four day week and that is probably the best thing to do with racing having short fields so wouldn't a Thursday through Sunday schedule be better? Also, why does track management at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar run nine and ten races on the weekends and then subject themselves to having problems during the week filling the card? Food for thought.
Nice looking win on Saturday by Alphie's Bet when winning the $200,000 Snow Chief. While perhaps a cut below the best around these parts, the 3-year-old colt certainly can make some noise with the way he looked on Saturday. Trained by Alexis Barba and ridden by Mike Smith, the son of Tribal Rule proved a prompt pick at 3-5 while drawing away from his rivals to return $3.40 for the win. Connections say they may be pointing towards a run at the Belmont Stakes next.
Sorry to hear about Eskendereya, the favorite for Saturday's 136th Kentucky Derby, was withdrawn from the race Sunday morning because of swelling in his left front leg, trainer Todd Pletcher said. This is a perfect reason for fans to not get caught up in the hype and hoopla leading up to the Derby. get excited when they enter the gate, not weeks or months before. It may not be as fun, but it certainly keeps one from disappointment and letdowns.
Compari was scratched from Sunday's Grade III $100,000 Inglewood Handicap after "heat" was found in his front foot on Sunday morning. The gelded son of Redattore had galloped on Saturday.
Jess Jackson, the majority owner of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, confirmed to Churchill Downs officials that Rachel Alexandra would run on Friday in the Grade 2, $400,000 La Troienne Stakes, part of the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
By the way, congratulations to the connections of Gallant Son who took the diluted Grade III $100,000 Inglewood Handicap under Mike Smith who gave the son of Malabar Road a nice ride for trainer Frank Lucarelli. The winner paid $8.20 to his backers.
There will be a Super High 5 carryover of $39,841.40 into Wednesday's card, courtesy of Carbon High who took the 9th race at $62.40.

A day for the dust to settle
Excuse us for overlooking the importance of yesterday's San Juan Capistrano Handicap run on closing day yesterday at Santa Anita. This has been our favorite race run at Santa Anita since I was a kid and I have always loved the marathon distance run over the turf course. But admittedly, the race has indeed loss a lot of it's luster over the years as the europeans don't ship in as much anymore and the race can sometimes be for higher priced claimers running against one another seeing who can outlast the other. Take for example Skellytown (3rd, 25/1) running off a $25k claim in his last race. But yesterday's race brought back some class to the race, with Bourbon Bay winning.
Bourbon Bay was the first horse in 17 years to have won the Santa Anita San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Rey and the San Juan Capistrano, all marathon turf races, all graded races. The last time a horse accomplished this feat was back in 1993 when Kotashaan took the "series." Astray also won all 3 races in 1974. So Bourban Bay is third horse to accomplish this feat which is worth some recognition for sure. Congratulations to his connections for this feat. As for the europeans returning to the race, well, lets just say that the lone filly entered in the race yesterday didn't inspire many. Going postward at 24-1, Princess Taylor never raised a gallop and finished next to last in the field of 10. Maybe next year we can improve on this area.
Santa Anita was down with figures in all areas when the final numbers were counted.
